On December 14th the FCC Commissioners voted 3-2 to eliminate longstanding net neutrality protections, reclassify internet service providers as ‘information services’ under Title I of the Communications Act, and ban states from enacting their own net neutrality protections.

The order leaves both the FCC and the states powerless to protect consumers and businesses against net neutrality violations by Internet Service Providers (ISPs) like Comcast, AT&T, and Verizon that connect us to the Internet.
Surprisingly, Americans overwhelmingly oppose this order with significant bi-partisan support. In fact, 83 percent of Americans, including 3 out of 4 Republicans, wanted the protections to remain in place.
Once the order takes effect, both the ISPs and the states will be powerless to protect consumers and businesses. ISPs will be allowed to deny Americans access to the internet as they see fit by blocking, slowing down websites, disrupting applications, and eliminating services. They can charge online companies for access to an ISP’s customers and block those that don’t pay.
The problem is that 51 percent of Americans have only one ISP to choose from so there is no free market for internet access in America. We have to keep the fight going.
