In Delaware, only 52% of children read at grade level by third grade; that number drops to 37% in 17 low income zip codes, including Wilmington, Dover and Western/Central Sussex County. Children who are competent and passionate readers by 3rd grade have a strong foundation for success in school and in life and studies show that children with access to their local library see increases in reading scores on standardized tests in their school.
That’s why the Delaware Library Association is proud to partner with the EveryLibrary Institute to encourage residents of Delaware to get a library card during national library card sign up month. We believe all Delaware Residents should have a library card and that’s why we’ve launched GetALibraryCardDE.org for the month of September to help residents understand the importance of getting a library card today.
Your donations help us reach more Delaware residents to help them to get a library card and support libraries across the state. In fact, every $10 we raise helps us reach 1,000 people in our state to encourage them to #GetALibraryCardDE.
Throughout the month we’ll be promoting library cards across the state. You can join the campaign by using the hashtag #GetALibraryCardDE on social media and posting a selfie with your library card. We’re also encouraging Delaware Residents to share why they love their Delaware Library card!
Library cards are a critical part of the lives of hundreds of thousands of Delaware residents. A library card in Delaware gives you access to millions of books, magazines, movies, classes and so much more. For many, library cards are a lifeline to help people gain the skills they need to get ahead when times get tough. At Delaware libraries you can get help finding a job, launching a small business or non-profit, or just finding something to read or watch or entertain the family.
We are especially encouraging the parents in Delaware to sign their children up for a library card. Delaware libraries help young people get ahead through programs that instill a love of literacy like summer reading and storytimes at their local library. Children can get help with their homework and access highspeed internet.
So, join us for National Library Card Sign-Up month in September and get your library card at getalibrarycardde.org and don’t forget to encourage your friends and family to get a library card too!
Your donations today help us support libraries across the state of Delaware, the Delaware Library Association, and the Delaware Division of Libraries.
