The Need for FY 2026 State Funding Increase for Public Libraries

The Delaware Libraries community is asking state legislators to approve a $2.1 million increase in Library Standards funding for Fiscal Year 2026. This critical funding boost would raise the total Library Standards budget to $8.47 million, ensuring that libraries across all three counties can continue to meet the growing needs of their communities.

At a recent hearing before the Joint Finance Committee, library leaders emphasized how Delaware’s libraries serve as essential community hubs for education, workforce readiness, digital access, and telehealth services. While state investments have expanded library facilities in recent years, operational funding has not kept pace with rising costs for staffing, materials, and technology. Without additional funding, many libraries—especially in Kent and Sussex counties—may struggle to maintain essential services.

Lawmakers demonstrated strong support for Delaware Libraries during the hearing. The new Secretary of State expressed her admiration for libraries, and Senator Darius Brown inquired about the amount of additional funding required to fully support the Library Standards line item. However, concerns were raised regarding potential federal funding shifts and emergency preparedness. Delaware Libraries are dedicated to providing legislators with accurate information that can guide their funding decisions.

By securing this funding increase, Delaware Libraries can sustain and expand services that help residents of all ages thrive. We appreciate the leadership of our state lawmakers and their ongoing commitment to ensuring that libraries remain accessible, innovative, and responsive to community needs.
