Support School Libraries in Putnam County Florida

As the Putnam County School Board considers the budget and staffing priorities for 2018, we need your help to support the transformational work that school librarians perform every day.

The proposed budget for FY18 may eliminate library media specialists (Librarians) in Putnam County Schools. This would be a great disservice to the students of Putnam County, who need highly qualified, certified, instructional personnel in their school libraries who create safe and engaging spaces for student achievement and promote a life-long love of reading. We need your help! Please demonstrate your support for school librarians and your concern for the students of Putnam County by sending an e-mail to the school board expressing the importance of healthy library programs in our schools.

Just $5-25 a month ensures we can continue our work supporting school libraries

While the school board in Putnam County, FL., has agreed to delay a final decision on the future of several school librarian positions until May 23rd, they have indicated that school libraries may be on the chopping block in the future. It's up to us to spread the word in Putnam County and across Florida that school librarians matter. Please help keep the school library media specialists working with students across Putnam County schools by using this form to send an email to the school board today.

The school library is the largest classroom in the school. It serves every child and should have a collection that supports the curriculum. From before the school day starts through the day's lesson plan and into independent learning time after the bell rings, an effective school library program is key to student achievement and success. But, in reality, school librarians are the most important part of the library. These effective educators work with Putnam County's kids on individualized learning and self-paced discovery. They are co-teachers who extend the lesson plans beyond the classroom. They support students and faculty alike as educators, trainers, and guides. As our colleagues at FAME, the Florida Association of Media Educators, put it, school librarians "....transform their libraries into the hubs at their schools with technology, collaboration, project-based learning, digital citizenship lessons, making, gaming, school-wide events, and professional development."
